Silver Salmon Fishing

Silver Salmon (Coho Salmon) offer an exciting day of fishing due to their acrobatic skills of leaping, jumping, diving and all the other tricks they will use to get off your hook.  Pound per pound Silver Salmon are one of the most acrobatic and enjoyable fish that you can catch.
Our Silver Salmon caught within Resurrection Bay and the Gulf of Alaska usually run in the 8- 14 pound range with exceptions reaching up to 22 pounds.  The waters that we fish are so abundant
with feeder fish and the Silvers are voraciously feeding prior to running into fresh water for spawning that these fish can gain a pound or more a week during mid to late summer.

The Silvers begin to show up most years in late June to early July and usually are around through September.  Although there are thousands of Silvers returning to our waters each season there
seam to be times that are really peak.  Nothing compares to hitting the Silvers at their peak where they are schooled up and feeding.  Let’s just say that you will find very
little time to even stop for a drink or a bathroom break.

At the height of the Silver run you will see Silvers literally jumping out of the water while feeding or dodging being fed upon by Sea-Lions, Salmon Sharks and Orcas.  The limit for Silvers are 3 per person per day outside Resurrection Bay and 6 per person per day inside Resurrection Bay.  The increased limit within the bay is due to the stocking done to augment the run within the bay.

There are not many things that you will experience more exciting than being involved in a multiple Silver hookup.  We have times where 2-4 fish will be on at the same time and due to their acrobatics
it is very much a dance on the boat being choreographed by the crew to attempt to prevent the lines from getting tangled.  There are many thrills and tons of laughter in this event.

We fish Silvers with medium weight Ugly Stick Rods and Shimano Tekota 700 Level Line Reels.
This combination gives a very good feel of the fight as the rod is just the right size to really feel the fight.  Techniques vary from mooching with herring plugs and hootchie  skirts to trolling with
down-riggers or divers.  The Captain will decide on the method of fishing based upon experience
and knowledge of which techniques best fit the conditions on any particular day. A highly bunched
up school of Silvers in a cove in a feeding frenzy will be fished by drifting through them while mooching whereas Silvers that are dispersed and traveling in smaller schools hunting will be
fished by trolling.  Our crew will be right there for you to assist you in technique if needed and to
keep your hook baited so you are always ready for the strike that starts the acrobatic display!
