Although the King Salmon (Chinook Salmon) run is not as large in numbers of fish as the Silver Salmon runs the Kings make up in size where they lack in numbers. Fighting an ocean caught King Salmon on a light weight rod and reel will definitely get your heart pumping. The King Salmon is the largest Pacific Salmon with the world record sport caught King weighing in at a little over 97 pounds. This fish was caught on the Kenai River in 1986 and although many have come very close no one has exceeded that mark… yet! Yearly the state of Alaska Department of Fish and Game will report Kings being caught commercially that exceed 110- 120 pounds. I personally have seen Kings on the Kenai River late in the season that surfaced and looked like a porpoise out in the water in that brief instance that it was visible.
The Kings caught in Resurrection Bay and Gulf of Alaska average more in the 20- 40 pound range with occasional Kings coming in around the 50 pound mark.
Although not many Charter Operators in Seward target the Kings they are best caught in May- June with some being brought in all season. Early season Combination trips will target Halibut and Kings. King charters can be had in May and June where some of the charters that specialize in King fishing will fish inside Resurrection Bay for them. Our Combo trips are fished for them outside the bay because our personal opinion is that Halibut fishing outside the bay in the Gulf of Alaska far exceeds inside the bay.
King Salmon are usually fished by trolling with down-riggers.
